Gavin Lautenbach

Gavin Lautenbach is one of Africa’s most widely travelled and experienced safari guides. He has been guiding safaris since 1997 from the African savanna to high mountains in Ethiopia and the forests of the Congo. As the co-founder of Mammoth Safaris, he is intimately involved in the thinking and planning of guests’ safaris to highest standards as well as guiding safaris on bespoke private safaris.

The leopard is Gavin’s favourite animal, one which saw him spend years tracking, filming and documenting behaviour at the world famous Londolozi Private Game Reserve in South Africa’s Sabi Sands. He has spent a great deal of time on foot walking amongst Africa’s big game, so knows what makes a great yet safe safari experience. He has led private safaris to some of the continent’s most challenging regions to find some of its endangered species. He is also deeply committed to assisting other guides in their development. With the Essential Guiding team he runs guide development courses, sometimes spending weeks at a time in the most spectacular parks and safari hotspots where our guests go on safari.

He has travelled the globe in search of rare and unique species from South America and Mexico to India and South-east Asia. His other great passion is fishing and travels widely for the right waters and right fish. One great catch was meeting Katlyn on the plains of the Serengeti which has started a whole new chapter in travel for them both.

Gavin’s fun-loving nature combined with deep knowledge of African safaris is sure to help tailor the perfect safari for you.
